Piano Sonata No.1 (1995)
WARNING: This piece contains material not suitable for younger or more sensitive marsupials. Listener discretion is advised.
This
was
churned out in a few days as an act of necessity, which, though pregnant at the
time, would not become the mother of invention for another three weeks. I
do, however, have a sequenced recording of it as well as an unhealthy
willingness to humiliate myself, so here it is ![]()

Wedding Piece for
Wendy and Ian ![]()
This was
originally written for violin and piano, and those of you who were present when
my sister and brother-in-law walked down the aisle may remember something which
sounded rather entirely unlike this piece. As soon as I find out what the
violinist and pianist played, or even what they smoked prior to playing it, I'll
include that here too; until then, all I have to go on is the score that I placed
in front of them, which I have arranged here for piano. ![]()

Dave Macfarlane's Musicals
I have long intended to compose a series of suites or record the overtures from my musicals and upload them to this site. At present that aim is, much like Alpha Centauri, somewhat beyond my reach. In the meantime, I have been going through archaic recordings in search of something that might give some sense of the three works that are dearest to my heart.
The only piece I found suitable to put up here is an old "overture" for my second musical. It was written and recorded over a weekend after I became a tad self-conscious about sending out a CD on the coming Monday that consisted of 25 tracks of my own voice being mercifully accompanied by a piano.
As the piece's instrumentation was determined by which of the sounds I then possessed sounded least awful, and its orchestration was an exercise in hiding the weaknesses of those sounds, a dear friend of mine who loved the musical rightly counseled me to expunge the recording from existence immediately.
I've decided that for all its
faults, it does convey some sense of
the music of my second musical ("Think Again" underwent several
wholesale rewrites since 1997, but all of these melodies remain). Until I
am in better shape (or get an alarmed call from my friend) I will leave this
"overture" up here. As soon as I am able, I promise to give you
the opportunity to mock me freely by putting together works from the three
musicals that will be entirely devoid of caveats. ![]()

Songs Without Walnuts, Nos. 1-6
For violin and piano
These pieces preserve some songs I wrote when I was about eight or nine-years-old. I therefore couldn't honestly say that they didn't have words. Thankfully, no such sense of honesty prevailed when I dubbed them works of music. Also, walnuts are funny. Seriously. Ever talk to a walnut? If so, I have a number you can call. And speak to a pecan.
Here is a link, strictly for the very curious, to some horrendously rudimentary "recordings" of these pieces.
